THE CHEAPEST ISN'T CHEAP

It is true, there is always someone willing to do the job cheaper.

I have learned over the years between working in family owned, privately held, publicly traded, Fortune 500s, and now being as a business owner, a few things hold true.

One is, there are three types of companies to do business with:

GUY WITH A TRUCK - THE Pros - the cheapest, lowest overhead, has a business card, a phone, and some experience. THE Cons - this one is not insured. If the job is done right and there are no problems, this is the guy. The concern with this one is, there is no room for error. If the job is done wrong, and, or something is damaged in the process, there is no backing to pay for it. This "company" may or may not be legitimately registered. This company may or may not be properly licensed. When a job is done wrong or something is damaged, it cost more now than the original job scope for a legitimate contractor to come in, fix the problem, then re-do the job properly. Often, there are not clear, written, and signed contracts for these jobs. It can escalade quickly to the court room to be resolved at the expense of both parties.

MID-SIZED COMPANY - THE Pros - Large chance of dealing directly with an owner somewhere during the process of the job. Odds are an owner will be one who answers the phone (not just during a crisis). The owners are still involved in the day to day operations of overseeing the business. Reputation, testimonials, referrals, word of mouth, and reputation mean more to this company and it's people. As a client, you are never more than one person removed from talking with an owner, or someone with a steak in the company who can and will make decisions, quickly. These companies have years of experience. They do not arrive on the scene overnight, often from the "Guy with a Truck" who realized early quality and reputation is everything, and survived the first three years. These companies are insured and licensed appropriately. The low overhead helps to control the cost. Price of doing business is not the cheapest, or the most expensive. THE CONS - You often have to be referred / recommended by a friend to these companies to sort through them. There is often not a jingle, TV, or radio ad to help you memorize their phone number. The logo may or may not be recognizable.

LARGE COMPANY - THE Pros - financial backing to address issues, damage, and concerns. These companies have a recognizable logo, advertisements, and have spent the money on marketing to get their name and logo out there for you. These companies have years of experience. They do not arrive overnight. These companies are insured and licensed appropriately. THE Cons - the chain of command can include laborers, project manager, office manager, someone to answer the phone to redirect your calls, possibly and automated system to handle call volume and redirect your calls, but press 1 for owner is not a choice. Not always, but by now the owners are often removed from the day to day operations of the company. Employees attitude and desire to quickly resolve issues is completely dictated by the culture in place around them, good or bad. These companies can be bought as an investment, removing the original owner and the experience of that owner. The clients pay for all of the brand recognition, advertising, familiar jingle, automated phone system, 800 number, and large staff. So the cost of doing business with these companies is reflected in your invoice.

STONE WALL CLEANING

One area we do a great deal of work during winter months is the cleaning of stone walls. When the vegetation and landscaping dies back, a year's worth of the black mold growth, algae growth, and gray water stains from the rain become an embarrassing eye sore to normally beautiful neighborhoods and luxury homes.

There are handful of methods for cleaning stone walls. A few are partially successful, but an improvement all the same. One method is with various acids available, but they are acids and will kill whatever these acids come into contact with. Another method is to add an agent or chemical. Then a team is require to manually brush the area. This is a lengthy process. The job site quickly becomes more of an eyesore and interruption than the original problem. The run off from these agents and chemicals is detrimental to plant, animal (wild & pets), and water life. The additives will work they way down to enter the soil and surrounding water ways for weeks to follow. Power washing is an option, but still requires an agent or chemical additive. Same surrounding plant, animal, and water life problems with excessive run off, increasing the affected environmental areas.
We remove it. We clean the stone walls on homes, office buildings, neighborhood entries, and perimeter walls with dry ice blasting.

Dry ice blasting is EPA approved. It is environmentally friendly and will not kill vegetation, water life, animals, birds, and surrounding water ways.
The dry ice is the solid form of CO2. The dry ice blasting pellets upon impact, dissipate returning it to gas form. Their is not water introduction with ice blasting. This eliminates the concerns with gates rusting, damage to lighting, gate openers, hinges, cameras, and other electronics in the area.

Dry ice blasting can do in one hour what a team of four or five can do manually with agents or chemical additives taking 4 to 6 hours. The interruption time is considerably less with dry ice blasting.

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE DIRTY ON DRY ICE BLASTING

Dry Ice Blasting?
Many people ask, “Why dry ice blasting instead of more traditional types of cleaning?” There are advantages to dry ice blasting and  some disadvantages too. I will go through and simplify each.
The Bad
So let's just get the bad out of the way first. The list is much shorter and you will see why. Dry ice blasting comes with an initial sticker shock to most. This is because plant managers and finance teams only see the ice blasting costs. It is important to compare your total cost of using other methods to the cost of ice blasting. The cost of chemical agents, man power, additional safety precautions, OSHA fines for compliance failure and injuries, increased employee liability risks, prep times, equipment restoration / rebuild times, AND TOTAL DOWN TIME FRAMES.

The next issue is ice blasters are not abundant and readily available in every area. Many projects require mobilization. Dry ice blasters are not typically city centric, but will mobilize.

The third is dry ice blasting pellets availability. Dry ice blasting, with any contracting, requires planning and scheduling. There is a 2 business notice for ordering dry ice blasting pellets. Nothing detrimental, or out of the ordinary compared to any project. We all have to order materials and prepare to do a job. Again, this isn't terrible; just something to be aware of when searching for a dry ice blasting contractor.

Last - Rent it and do it yourself - well, you can. You can also rent a jack hammer and a bulldozer. Much like a large at home do-it-yourself project, it is always worth paying a reputable and insured contractor with ratings, reviews, and experience. The compressed air must be filtered and after-cooled; not readily available just anywhere. Compressor rental companies have to specialize in offering these units. The dry ice is - 109*. It is extremely sensitive to any amount of moisture coming through the air lines into the machine. This moisture can cause a true H2O ice block where the dry ice is fed through. That can cause a shut down from 3 to 6 hours depending upon the severity and amount of water let in. Dry ice blasting machines do not have trouble shooting codes or lighting. It is either on and working, or not. It is one of three things; 1. air issues, 2/ electrical / circuit issue, or 3. dry ice issue in the unit, in the feed, clog in the blasting hose, or at the gun.  Which one is it and where is the question.
The Good
It is amazing how it cleans a piece of equipment. Multiple industries are moving to dry ice for cleaning. One ice blaster can often do in one hour what takes a 4 man crew 4 hours (applications & debris levels can vary). So imagine a 4 man crew manually cleaning that takes 4 days. That is 4 days of shut down and lost production in addition to all of the risk, time, a designated safety officer, additional daily safety meetings, and the cost factors listed before. One ice blaster can typically do that same job in one 8 hour day. So all of the sudden, ice blasting is no longer so expensive when you have 3 days of production returned to you. Production = money! The same is true in fire and mold remediation. The job can take 3 days less, returning the home owner back to their normal life that much sooner.

Dry ice blasting is well known for quality restoration to production equipment. Regular cleaning adds to the life of any equipment. It reduces the level of friction and resistance during operation. These are hidden reductions in costs.
There is no physical remaining by-product of dry ice cleaning. Previous cleaning with water, chemicals, soda, and sand blasting would create a big mess to clean up afterwards. This is not true with dry ice blasting. Upon the dry ice impact to the surface, dry ice immediately supplements in to a gas, leaving no additional by-product cleanup. Once again, returning to production that much sooner.
With the world becoming more environmentally conscious, dry ice blasting has a huge advantage. Dry ice is  made from CO2 gas. Dry ice is a recycled material to begin with. The waste cleanup from a cleaning job is minimal. Because dry ice turns directly in to a gas, it does not need cleanup. The only cleanup needed is for the waste/debris that get blasted off while cleaning. Imagine having to pay for chemical waste disposal after cleaning. In many plant cases, every chemical brought into the plant by contractor, or direct deliver has to be registered with the safety officer on site. This comes with hazard coding, as well as safety response protocols in case of spills, protocols for if the agent comes into contact with the skin, eyes, or is inhaled. Add another protocol for combustible chemicals (almost all cleaning chemical agents!).
A few simple letters every safety officer has to live by... OSHA. Here is an exert from the OSHA Fact Sheet document  titled, "Protecting Workers from the Hazards of Abrasive Blasting Materials"
Commonly used abrasive materials:
  •  Silica sand (crystalline)
  •  Coal slag
  •  Garnet sand
  •  Nickel slag
  •  Copper slag
  •  Glass (beads or crushed)
  •  Steel shot
  •  Steel grit
  •  Specular hematite (iron ore)
Alternative, less toxic blasting materials include:
  •  Dry ice

The first recommendation is dry ice. It is easy to see why companies are moving away from the traditional cleaning.
Now here is what the same document also says about health hazards -
Health Hazards Abrasive blasting operations can create high levels of dust and noise. Abrasive material and the surface being blasted may contain toxic materials (e.g., lead paint, silica) that are hazardous to workers.
  • Silica sand (crystalline) can cause silicosis, lung cancer, and breathing problems in exposed workers
  • Coal slag and garnet sand may cause lung damage similar to silica sand (based on preliminary animal testing)
  • Copper slag, nickel slag, and glass (crushed or beads) also have the potential to cause lung damage
  • Steel grit and shot have less potential to cause lung damage
  • Slags can contain trace amounts of toxic metals such as arsenic, beryllium, and cadmium.
That is a pretty dark list. It is like the side effects portion of a drug commercial, BUT nothing to address the health hazards of dry ice. Now let's not be fooled. Dry ice blasting must have proper ventilation to avoid asphyxiation. Dry ice is CO2 in solid form and upon impact from blasting returns to it's natural gas state.

As with any blasting environment, PPE is to be worn at all times to include, but not limited to eye and hearing protection.

Dry ice blasting is non abrasive. Simply, this means that dry ice blasting will not damage most of your equipment or surfaces like sand or chemicals would. When a dry ice pellet hits a surface, it sublimates in to a gas. The process has zero impact to most equipment itself. It is however very effective for removing debris, adhesives, build up, coatings, film, grease, oil, and other production created layers.
Dry ice blasting is non-conducting, so it is ideal around robotics and most other electrical equipment. Just like standard equipment, electronics need to be cleaned. Fragmenting nozzles control the size of the dry ice pellet and it can be dialed down to basically snow texture. Water and sand blasting on electrons are not a good solution and can result in damage to the equipment. Both also can conduct electricity and pose shock hazards. Dry ice blasting is a great solution for that. The pressured air for dry ice blasting is after-cooled and filtered, so no water is getting to the equipment blasted.

Testimonials Mean The World!

Below is a recent testimony from one of our clients in the Dallas area. We did their mold remediation. Then they hired us again for HVAC. Next they asked us to oversee the build back and some remodeling.

I have always heard the importance of repeat and referral business. I read the book Raving Fans. I have taught the importance of asking for referrals and repeat business. There is no greater, louder applause than when a client calls us to perform additional works and or the referrals they send.

Testimonies like these are humbling reminders day in and day out to ALWAYS do our best work, to keep the moral of the team high, and never let up on quality.

"My wife and I have just completed the mold abatement process and rebuild of the affected areas of my home. The process was long and disruptive to our daily routine.

The IAQM folks made a very trying time much easier and painless through their experience/knowledge and understanding how much of an upheaval a mold situation can be to a property owner.

They were all very courteous, polite and trustworthy. My wife and I would highly recommend them for mold abatement work." - The Besserer Family November 4, 2015

Seasonal Cleaning

It is the time of year for holiday shut downs and skeleton crews in many of the manufacturing facilities across the US. This is the time for much needed cleaning and maintenance. These jobs have been put off all year long for the sake of keeping the production going.

On our page below, there is a great deal of information on dry ice blasting and how it works. Dry ice blasting is EPA & FDA approved cleaning. The dry ice is environmentally friendly. During blasting, the dry ice dissipates upon impact of the substrate after breaching the layer to be removed.

This method reduces down time. Dry ice blasting reduces labor cost and times. Applications may vary. A dry ice blasting team can do a job in 6 to 8 hours which traditionally takes 4 to 6 people to do over a period of days.

Now is the time to schedule dry ice blasting. Call (972) 564- 0477 to arrange a consultation for your application and for scheduling.

INSIDE AND OUT...

The vast majority of Americans need to spend more time outside. In addition to,  or in place of, Americans should also have their air tested in homes and at the office.

Great article to this effect...

IT IS COLD OUT THERE AND NOT ENOUGH KNOW IT

It doesn't seem all that long ago I was fired from my career of almost 9 years. I had given dedicated, company colors service day in and day out. I had sacrificed time with family, traveled, long hours, and all the other wording that typically goes along.

In my search for my own business, I tried a multitude of ideas along with a wealth of research, and talking with franchise recruiters. Nothing fit or fulfilled my internal needs or peaked my interest.

Along the way in this journey, a partnership opportunity arose through a couple my wife and I  have been friends with for better than 10 years. I can't ever remember discussing work with either of them. I didn't know what their company name was or what their offering was. When they heard I had a job change, Don and Katie presented me with a few different ideas on how to partner with them and expand a new service offering to their existing organization, IAQM.

I went home and reviewed these ideas with Amy. I started doing my research on each service. I went all the traditional routes of Google first, YouTube, then ratings, reviews, demand, competition, risks, concerns, rewards. Over and over after reviewing a product or service, I continually came back to looking at dry ice blasting. I was fascinated and had not ever seen or heard of this.

I am coming up on a year in December with my adventure into dry ice blasting. We bought our first piece of equipment in January. We did our fist mold remediation job immediately following the equipment purchase. It went horrible. Everything that could go wrong went wrong. We had down time, delays, it was not going at all as fast as advertised. Dry ice was turning into water blocks of ice clogging up the line and building up in the unit hopper. We finally finished the job. It took a few hours longer than if we had completed the job manually, with previous methods.

Hard headed, bound, and determined I took on another mold job. Same problems, and some new ones. Still we did not complete the job and save any time or man hours as advertised. It did not take as long as the previous job, but we were not impressing anyone or blowing the doors off. No pun intended.

At it again with another job. I shaved off a little time, the problems I did have, I was able to trouble shoot a little faster. Some of the previous issues I had learned to prevent through research, YouTube, and calling other ice blasters across the country.

DUH! All my previous careers, I built myself up by grabbing onto various mentors here and there. One for business. Another for career. One for personal growth, Spiritual, attitude, a marriage. I needed a blasting mentor who I was not a threat to and could call on any time. I called a couple and posed the mentoring to them. Everyone responded with, "Call me anytime. I went through all the same things. Good luck Willie. It will get better. Don't quit."

Today, I am 11 months into blasting. I can beat any traditional, manual labor methods. We don't deal with the down times. I can see and get ahead of those issues, and or all out avoid them together. I still call on my mentors before, during, and after jobs.

I have seen so many applications for dry ice blasting. We have cleaned inkers, brass fitting equipment, removed grease, oil, and grime build which was compromising the quality output and production of machinery. We have done mold remediation drastically reducing the traditional times and allowing home owners to return to normal living back at home sooner. We have finished a fire restoration and soot removal job in days compared the weeks the job was scheduled to take. We removed spray foam insulation from a home after a lightening strike in under 14 days. The job was forecast at 30 days prior to the introduction of dry ice blasting. We have cleaned and decontaminated equine transports for top performance horse owners to improve the living, transport conditions, and give these owners an edge over their competition.

I am proud to say we have not done a job to date without a raving, written testimonial to follow to date. Clients have thanked us for getting them back into their homes ahead of expected days living elsewhere. Production and maintenance managers can't believe how much production time was gained compared to their previous cleaning methods. Production equals dollars. Downed or quality compromised machinery only costs money. Maintenance, Quality Assurance, and Plant managers all rave over having the product quality output restored.

Most recently, I had a safety manager for a steel facility thank me. She said before, people had to enter into the production equipment space. OSHA was not a fan of this she stated.
We were able to effectively blast needing only line of sight, which we had. Our technicians did not have to go down into their equipment; a chemical, resin, fume-filled, adhesive, poor air quality, hot environment.

We continue work to expand this division of IAQM and get the word out. We have added equipment and expanded our bandwidth. We have multiple technicians now thoroughly trained to safely, efficiently, and effectively operate our dry ice blasting equipment.

DRY ICE BLASTING OVENS

Many industries use industrial ovens to heat treat, cure, and dry parts.  Over time, build up occurs on the inside. This will interfere at some point with heat transfer, heat distribution, the quality of the finished product, time frames, energy costs, and overall cleanliness. Manufactures routinely clean industrial ovens during preventative maintenance or scheduled shutdowns. Each oven producer has their suggested maintenance and cleaning schedules. The need becomes more frequent with aging units. It isn't cost effective to repeatedly purchase a new unit, but it is to dry ice blast one. If the product is a food, the additional concern is the desired flavor, uneven cooking, potential spot burning, appearance, and undesired excessive drying out.

When should blasting occur? The best time to schedule cleaning is ahead of, or in collaboration with routine maintenance. Another option is when the heating is no longer baking / curing evenly. When you start seeing signs of heated residue, ash, burn marks, and, or the normal curing process is now taking longer to complete. Blasting can be done any time access is allowed, on any shift, during, or around operation hours.

Ice blasting is a mobile operation. Dry ice blasting can occur inside your facility, or outside according to weather allowance. Ovens can be blasted in place, which is the practice of choice by most facilities.

Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide. Dry ice blasting is the only form of non-abrasive blasting, where dry ice pellets are accelerated in a pressurized air stream and directed at the surface in order to clean it. the method is similar to other forms of abrasive blasting such as sand blasting, plastic bead blasting, or soda blasting but substitutes dry ice as the medium. Dry ice blasting leaves no chemical residue. Dry ice sublimates at room temperature.

Dry ice blasting reduces the down time of the unit. Dry ice blasting can reduce the cleaning time by up to 60% on most units. There are many testimonials to this fact from plant and maintenance managers. We can help encourage production and maintenance to be on the same team by helping get the unit(s) back into production faster than traditional cleaning methods of the past. Dry ice blasting is both EPA and FDA approved cleaning method.

IAQM is the dry ice blasting service of choice for North Texas and the surrounding states. The IAQM dry ice blasting team is completely mobile and able to service the entire US. IAQM has been in business almost 15 years. IAQM maintains A+ ratings with both the Better Business Bureau and Angie's List.

As Mold Grows, So Does the Cost

Like anything else, as Mold continues to grow, be ignored, and or denied, the cost is also growing, being ignored, and denied... until it is finally assessed and addressed.

This is the case in a home, office, production facility, food or bar establishment, on farms, in grain silos, and so on. Nothing is exempt from mold.

The unbelievable promise over 700 years before Christ

Why do you complain, Jacob? Why do you say, Israel, “My way is hidden from the Lord ; my cause is disregarded by my God”? Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:27-31 NIV http://bible.com/111/isa.40.27-31.NIV

Article from FoodSafety Magazine - Chemical Cleaning Revisited

Dry Ice Blasting
Dry ice blasting is ideal for use in directed cleaning of areas where wet cleaning may be problematic such as in bakeries to remove carbon from racks and pans, as well as refrigeration equipment, ovens and stubborn, caked-on food splash from walls, floors and appurtenances. Dry ice blasting is a process in which solid carbon dioxide is accelerated in a pressurized dry air stream. The portable dry ice blasting equipment uses solid CO2 pellets that can be easily manufactured on site or supplied by a vendor; both are produced from recycled gas. The pellets themselves are nonconductive, chemically inert, nontoxic and nonflammable, and the process leaves no residue. They can clean almost any surface without damage because they are nonabrasive. The cleaning process has two phases; the first is through kinetic energy when the pellets impact upon a soiled surface. The second is when the dry ice further loosens any soiling through sublimation. Sublimation is where the CO2 changes instantly from a solid to a gas with a 400-fold increase in volume, thereby creating mini-explosions upon impact.

Initially, this technology had its drawbacks: the delivery nozzle would freeze over and the application wand would become encrusted with ice. However, the newer models have corrected this by providing dried air as a pressurized accelerant, and redesigning and effectively insulating cold-exposed parts to prevent ice buildup.

Top Reasons for Dry Ice Blasting

Top Reasons Dry Ice Blasting is Superior:

1. Superior clean: fewer cleaning cycles = less downtime

2. Machines can be cleaned in place: dry ice blasting is a dry process and requires no disassemble/reassembly which means much less downtime. Requires line of sight for successful cleaning.

3. Quicker clean: less resource = more run-time = more profits

4. Non-abrasive, nonflammable and non conductive: dry ice blasting won't damage most substrates and can be used safely on electrical components. Will not cause rust.

5. No secondary waste clean up: this not only saves additional cleanup labor and expense, but also means temporary containment areas can possibly be reused - an additional cost savings

6. Dry ice blasting is known for restoring production output to like new quality in most cases. A bi-product is often restored energy efficiency with production / manufacturing equipment.

7. Environmentally friendly: meets USDA, FDA and EPA guidelines

8. Operator safety: no exposure to chemicals or grit media

9. Operator efficiency: not as labor intensive as traditional cleaning methods

10. Clean enough for the food industry, strong enough(1) for everything else

IAQM VetClean is proud to announce our exclusive partnership with North Texas Hunter Jumper Club. In 2015, IAQM VetClean will provide the Hunter Derby winners at four events with its exclusive decontamination services for transport trailers. Dust carrying contaminants can wreak havoc on a horses respiratory health. The industry is now becoming aware that contaminants in dust compounds this issue ten fold.

From transport trailers to stalls to entire facilities, IAQM VetClean is the only green company that eliminates all biological, chemical and viral contaminants. There is a higher alert this year with the recent deaths of two horses in Galveston County linked a sometimes lethal strain of the herpes virus. EHV-1 can affect horses of all breeds and ages, and is spread via direct contact, indirect contact, and through the air. Traveling competitors intermixing animals at competitions is a major concern. These diseases can quarantine a barn, end a competition season, and potentially ruin a great reputation by default.
